Semester One Reflection
During this semester we created a PSA, short film and we are currently working on our feature film.
Our PSA we chose to do was mine. We could have had more time to make a more finished product but overall I was happy with the PSA.
This project took around 2 weeks to complete. We had three different ideas to choose from and we chose mine because the topic was relevant at the time and my group thought the concept was well developed. Some feedback we were given was to have better shadows and more clear audio. Some challenges we had was some of the props were not delivered and we had to improvise the shadows. In class I edited the video and tried to fix the audio as best I could. I did not have any free time to spend. I worked on the video until it was due. Overall, the video was successful but could be greatly improved.
The second project was our short film. We chose Skai's concept because it affects a lot of families on a daily basis and it is a very touching story.
I was cinematographer for this film. This is certainly not the best I could have done but I didn't have much control over the shots and how they looked. I want to redo this film with the shot looking like i wanted them to look like. The film turned out okay but still is not my best work. Our group worked well together but the director wasn't really directing but the main actress was?! I liked how the film turned out but I wanted to be better.
In the production of our feature I gave feedback to the main scripts writers and editors. Then they passed the info to others and changed the script. During the times we had free time I studied films and trailers and movie clips from different directors and cinematographers. I have my own style of camera shots and don't like to be constrained to a storyboard. I like to be in the moment while filming. I can take suggestions as well and I like to try new a risky things just to make sure there isn't any shot left behind.
My strength is cinematography. I am able to visualize the film with the script and frame shots based on the vision. As said previously I analyze and scrutinize films so I know what looks good and what doesn't. A weakness I have is sound editing. I still need to get used to the effects that can be placed onto audio to either enhance it or to make certain mood come out during the film. Sound is one of the most crucial parts of film making and I need to know how to use it effectively.
MX4D is supposedly supposed to immerse the audience into a movie like never before. I beg to differ. The movements did follow the movie however they did not follow one specific pattern or character. It was confusing at times and pull away from the movie. The smells were not accurate at all. They were pretty gross which also distracted from the movie. The movie overall was a pretty okay movie. The characters where mostly developed but the three new ones, Flash, Aqua-man, and Cyborg could have been developed more. The color grading and cinematography is similar to Marvel's movies. My favorite scene was when Superman came back to life and had no idea who he was. And he had his line "Tell me...Do you bleed?"
